Worlds first Zero Carbon Tesco Superstore in Ramsey, Peterborough is Complete

This landmark supermarket scheme, involved the construction of a new single storey, environmental, timber panel clad, timber framed Superstore with petrol filling station, delivery area, access roads, associated car parking and alterations to adjacent roads and highways to form access into the store.

Environmental Factors Include:

The building was constructed onto an ‘E Foundation’ which involved removing soil to existing Clay level and rebuilding the ground to improve the CBR rating. This is more Eco friendly as it reduces the amount of material removed from site and the subsequent import fill.

Structural Steel Back of House Structure with Eurobond cladding panels, with Format Y Glulam Timber framed sales floor with a larch composite timber cladding.

Nano Gel Roof lights, Airstract ventilation, Wind turbines and Sun Tubes. Rainwater harvesting, Solar powered street lights and external solar blinds.

Additional carbon neutral initiatives including cold aisle retrieval and sales fresh air de-humidification, low flow water fittings to staff and customer areas, daylight linked sensors for roof lights, CO2 refrigeration and energy efficient equipment to customer areas, staff restaurant and food counters.

The Store is run off a 250 kWe Combined Heating Power unit which is fuelled by Bio-Fuel which ispowering the store.  Any surplus energy is being sold back to the National Grid. The CHP unit has been designed so that there will be sufficient surplus heat to power a district heating main for an adjoining residential site.
