R G Carter undertook the task of expanding the existing Waitrose branch in The Podium Shopping Centre in the historic town of Bath. In a tight 32-week programme of works, the team worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week to complete the extension and re-fit, expanding the branch into what had previously been 15 separate retail units within the shopping centre.
The extension work almost tripled the branch’s available sales space to a total of 40,000-square-feet spread over two floors.
Customers were able to shop at the branch throughout the works, with phased temporary layouts used to allow for continuous trading. Waitrose Bath closed for only five days towards the end of the project to allow for a final fit-out and stocking.
A local library located in the middle of the shopping centre remained open throughout the project and access was made available via a relocated escalator.
Both internal and external seating has been added, with the addition of a café and ‘Food to Go’ section.
New escalators and lifts were installed and the offices, partner’s dining room and warehouse areas were relocated to the first floor of the shopping centre, previously the food court.
Over five months, the team overlaid the entire ground floor with Terrazzo tiles, smooth tiles made from marble chippings. This was the first time that this kind of work had been carried out in a live Waitrose branch anywhere in the country.
The official branch opening was held in November, with representatives from R G Carter and Waitrose in attendance. Our team presented a specially commissioned cake at the opening, which was made to look like the newly extended branch.
All materials were obtained from a sustainable resource where possible.
Local labour and suppliers were used where possible.
On-site, the team have managed to recycle 97% of waste generated.
