BRICKLAYER

So you want to be a Bricklayer . . .?

If you want to be a Bricklayer, you’ll have to like the great outdoors and not mind working at heights. You are however protected by the stringent safety standards which have to be followed. Bricklayers also have to be physically fit - able to lift fair-sized weights and climb ladders, at least. They have to be prepared to travel and spend periods of time away from home too. Last, but not least, they have to be careful, accurate and able to follow detailed technical instructions from people like architects.

Using both manufactured and natural materials Bricklayers construct all types of walling; this varies from plain walls that are used to protect us from the weather up to ornamented work using many different types of brick and other materials.l Brickwork is an essential part of many structures and as such has to be constructed accurately and to the design requirements. The work may be on new buildings, extensions and maintenance or restoration of existing buildings. Each project is different and a wide range of skills is necessary to enable the Bricklayer to cope with an ever changing pattern of work. The tools used are trowels for spreading the mortar, lump hammer and bolster to cut bricks to size and a brick hammer to trim the brick. Spirit levels and Bricklayers lines are used to check the vertical and horizontal alignment of walling.

WORKING CONDITIONS
work is mainly outdoors (and will continue in most weather conditions), but location changes from project to project and involves working at height and on scaffolds. Safety awareness is an essential part of all training and where safety equipment or personal protective equipment is provided it should be used at the appropriate times. Basic safety equipment includes a safety helmet and protective footwear; items such as goggles, gloves and ear defenders will be provided as required.

Everyone must follow the Company and the safety rules and procedures. Some materials will need careful handling and storage.
