ELECTRICIAN
So you want to be an Electrician . . .?
People qualified in electrical installation engineering
are in demand in all areas of society in industrial, commercial and domestic
environments.
The work may be on new buildings and extensions or on the
maintenance and replacement of existing systems. Depending on the qualifications
achieved (ie Electrician, Approved electrician, Technician Electrician)
the work may vary from the installation of a new socket or light fitting
to the design and implementation of a full electrical system into a major
building project.
Each installation is different and a wide range of skills
and technical knowledge is necessary in order to adapt to new situations
and client requirements. It is necessary for electricians to ensure that
systems fit accurately into existing structures. Installation work must
be carried out as smoothly and cleanly as possible and may require walls,
surfaces and ceilings to be cut away and then replaced to a satisfactory
standard. Above all, electricians must follow a strict code of safe working
practices - lives will depend on the ability of the electrician to install
systems that are both safe and functional.
The variety of tools used consists of screwdrivers of different
sizes, wire strippers, side cutters and bending machines, as well as measuring
tape and spirit level. In addition a number of specialised instruments
are required in order to carry out a full inspection and test procedure
before an electrical system may be energised.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is carried out mainly indoors but location changes from project
to project and may involve working at height with the aid of ladders and
scaffolding. Safety awareness is an essential part of all training and
where safety equipment or personal protective equipment is provided it
should be used at the appropriate times. Basic safety equipment includes
a safety helmet and protective footwear, items such as goggles, gloves
and ear defenders will be provided as required.
Everyone must follow the Company and site safety rules
and procedures. In additional, there is a strict code of practice which
governs all electrical work and this must be adhered to at all times.
Some working materials will need careful handling and storage
