CARPENTER AND JOINER
So you want to be a Carpenter and Joiner . . .?
To be a Carpenter and Joiner you need to enjoy being one
of a team. You also need to be quite skilful with the traditional wood-working
tools, but dont worry if you havent had any DIY experience
- well train you to a much higher standard.
The use of natural products forms a very high percentage
of the Carpenter and Joiners working materials. The material most
often used is called softwood, but where durability and a natural decorative
finish is the main requirement, a tropical hardwood is used. Components
made from these products range from rough sawn timber to accurately machined
and assembled windows and doors. The work of the Carpenter and Joiner
involves both preparing and fixing components. To be able to cut, shape
and join these materials Carpenters and Joiners are trained to use and
look after a very comprehensive tool kit. A typical tool kit would contain
saws, hammers, planes, chisels, screwdrivers, set squares and measuring
tapes. The use of power tools such as drills, saws, planers and routers
is commonplace.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work can be carried out either indoors or outdoors, but locations change
from project to project and can involve working at height with the aid
of ladders, scaffolds, cradles and safety harnesses. Safety awareness
is an essential part of all training and where safety equipment or personal
protective equipment is provided it should be used at the appropriate
times. Basic safety equipment includes a safety helmet and protective
footwear, items such as goggles, gloves and ear defenders will be provided
as required.
Everyone must follow the Company and site safety rules
and procedures. Some materials will need careful handling and storage.
