PAINTER AND DECORATOR
So you want to be a Painter and Decorator . . .?
You need to be good with your hands, but dont worry
- no-one will expect you to have much DIY experience. Most of the work
is indoors, but some is outdoors. Youll need to be prepared to travel
to different sites as well.
Painters and Decorators apply protective and decorative
coatings to wall, ceilings and woodwork. The materials used give a good
coating to resist the weather and wear and tear. Where the work is visible,
colour and texture are used to provide an attractive finish. Painting
systems can range from heavy duty coatings on steelwork and seafront buildings
to interior decorating. The work may be on new buildings/structures or
maintaining or renovating existing ones. Surfaces must be well prepared
and need to be cleaned, old paint/paper removed and cracks and holes repaired.
Then they need to be smoothed and free from dust before painting can begin.
The paint is either applied by brush, roller or spray equipment. The finish
varies from single colour emulsion, gloss or eggshell work to highly decorative
work such as marbling or graining which looks like real marble or wood
grain. Other materials used include wallpaper and fabrics. Special techniques
such as rag rolling can make the work very varied. The main tools are
find quality brushes, rollers and spray equipment. Tools include scrapers,
filling knives, paper hanging tools, smoothing brushes, scissors, measuring
tape and plumbline.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is mainly indoors, but locations change from project to project and
can involve working at height with the aid of ladders, scaffolds, cradles
and safety harnesses. Safety awareness is an essential part of all training
and where safety equipment or personal protective equipment is provided
it should be used at the appropriate times. Basic safety equipment includes
a safety helmet and protective footwear; items such as goggles and ear
defenders will be provided as required.
Everyone must follow the Company and site safety rules
and procedures. Some materials will need careful handling and storage.
