PLASTERER

So you want to be a Plasterer . . .?

Plasterers have to be prepared to climb ladders in order to gain access to their work - although they spend most of their time indoors. It goes without saying that they are experts at using the specialist tools of the trade. It is also important to have some basic mathematical ability as you have to calculate areas of wall and corresponding volumes of material.

The work of a Plasterer is usually divided into two ares; Solid and Fibrous. Solid Plasterer’s work involves application and finishing plastering materials to walls, ceilings and floors, both internal and external. Fibrous Plasterers are involved with producing decorative and ornamental fibrous plasterwork by running, moulding and casting in a workshop. Cornice mouldings, centre pieces, decorative panelling and ornamentation produced in the workshops are fixed on-site by Plasterers. Some work can involve additional materials to give different surface textures e.g. pebble dash. Whether the Plasterer’s work is inside or outside, it is important that it is carried out to the correct requirements as other skilled people (Painters and Decorators) will carry on where the Plasterer leaves off. The tools used to prepare, apply and finish the plaster are trowels, floats, straight edges, hawk, floating and featheredge rules, level and squares.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work can be carried out mainly indoors, but locations change from project to project and may involve working at height. Safety awareness is an essential part of all training and where safety equipment or personal protective equipment is provided it should be used at the appropriate times. Basic safety equipment includes a safety helmet and protective footwear, items such as goggles, gloves and ear defenders will be provided as required.

Everyone must follow the Company and site safety rules and procedures. Plasters will need careful handling and storage.
