PLUMBER

So you want to be a Plumber . . .?

Plumbers have to be good with their hands. They need to be good at planning and organising too - it’s no use turning up at a job with the wrong sort of pipes. As with all construction work, it’s important to be able to work as one of a team. You also need to be prepared to travel from site to site.

The main work of the Plumber is in installing and maintaining hot and cold water systems, gas services and heating systems. Using a wide variety of hand and power tools, Plumbers cut, bend, join and fix pipes and sheet materials. These materials can be copper, zinc, aluminium and plastic. The type of work can vary from inside - e.g. water supply, central heating, sanitation and water systems - to outside - e.g. rainwater systems and sheetwork to roofs and walls. These systems are installed and then checked to see that they are working correctly and safely. Repair and maintenance work involves Plumbers in finding out the cause of the problem, replacing the damaged or defective pipe or parts and testing the system. A typical tool kit would contain wrenches and spanners of different sizes, saws, cutters, pipe bending equipment, pipe cleaning materials and solder as well as a measuring tape and a small level. Compressed gas equipment is used for joining some pipes and fittings.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work can be either indoors or outdoors, but location changes from project to project and may involve working at height or on scaffolds. Safety awareness is an essential part of all training and where safety equipment or personal protective equipment is provided it should be used at the appropriate times. Basic safety equipment includes a safety helmet and protective footwear; goggles, gloves and ear defenders will be provided as required.

Everyone must follow the Company and site safety rules and procedures. Some materials will need careful handling and storage.
