TECHNICIAN

So you want to be a Technician . . .?

Who and What are Technicians?
Technicians are not so concerned with using their hands; they are more technical than academic. Although they need quite demanding qualifications, they never get bogged down in theory that has no practical application. Technicians on the whole are doers rather than talkers. Of course, some technicians decide to use their qualifications to go on to do university degrees, but not before they have learned about the way things happen in the real world. Although you may not have noticed many technicians, they are the people sitting at computers or behind drawing boards or helping to run things from the site office. They are not so much the people who make things as the people who make things happen. Without them nothing would ever go ahead in the construction industry, the designs would never turn into plans and the plans would never turn into schedules and nothing would ever get built. With R G Carter you will be given comprehensive training, experience of real work and time off to get vocational qualifications from college or a training centre. You will get paid as well as earning yourself valuable qualifications and experience.

Building technicians help construct buildings as part of a team. They may work on site (supervising the operations), in an office (drawing up plans, schedules, documents and designs), or usually a mixture of the two.

Estimators know all about the costs involved in construction - down to the last penny. They are particularly important when the company they work for is tendering for a contract (that is, trying to get the job of building something).

Buyers have a specialist role in either building or civil engineering projects. They know all about materials used in construction and the people who supply them. It’s their job to negotiate the right price and time for delivery, so that the project can go ahead on time and to budget.

Quantity Surveyors need technical and financial knowledge. They keep tabs on the cost of the construction work that is going on to make sure that the project meets its financial objectives. They are mainly based in offices, but the job will involve visits to sites.
