A significant milestone has been marked in the expansion of Highfield Littleport Academy as pupils took part in a ceremonial steel signing. The school is growing to better accommodate the growing number of pupils who require special school places.
Highfield Littleport provides a nurturing and inclusive environment for children and young people, aged 2 to 19 with special educational needs and disabilities. The expansion will provide 50 additional spaces with great sensory facilities and a life skills base to further prepare learners for their next step in education, work and life.
Pupils and staff attended the ceremony from Highfield Littleport Academy and R G Carter, which is building it, and Cambridgeshire County Council, which is funding and commissioning the extension. The students made their mark on the building by signing the steels and excitedly saw the steels being placed into position. Freddy who was present at the ceremony was one of the original students who has been at Highfield Littleport since it opened nearly 8 years ago. He is now witnessing the next stage of Highfield’s development and commented ‘I was here at the beginning and now the school is getting bigger!’
Cambridgeshire County Council is funding the expansion for the much-needed provision for learners with additional needs. Jo German, Capital Project Officer from Cambridgeshire County Council said ‘It is great to be able to work collaboratively with Highfield Littleport to deliver this fantastic project for the learners of Cambridgeshire.’
Yvonne Skillern, Headteacher of Highfield Littleport Academy, shared: “We are all getting excited about the much needed expansion to our school for our young people. It will provide excellent opportunities to prepare our learners for adulthood.”
The new extension features a two-storey building with 5 main classrooms, providing comprehensive special school education and dedicated areas for sensory integration and the development of life skills. The extension is due to take its first wave of additional pupils in January 2026.
