Tewin Road Recycling Centre

Working for Welywn Hatfield Borough Council (WHBC) and Hertfordshire County Council (HCC), R G Carter has redeveloped Tewin Road Depot.

The Tewin Road site, previously used by WHBC as a vehicle depot for the operational vehicles and offices required for the following services; street cleansing, grounds maintenance, and waste collection, was in critical need of regeneration.

The site also had several bays for the tipping of waste collected from the street cleansing, grounds maintenance and general waste. The new scheme now provides WHBC with upgraded facilities for these ‘Streetscene’ services and HCC have relocated the existing Household Recycling Centre to Tewin Road site in order for both councils to realise operational efficiencies and improve service provisions for their stakeholders.

The site remained operational for the duration of the construction period and works were phased to allow the waste removal services to the council to remain active throughout. The team carried out extensive surveys across the site, developed the design from RIBA Stage 2 to RIBA stage 4, and our in-house piling division, GM Piling remediated a chalk solution feature on site as part of the enabling works during the PCSA stage.
