Our teams at R G Carter often uncover the past whilst working on historic projects; the team at Christ’s College in Cambridge did so just recently!

Whilst renovating one of the smallest shops along King Street, which will become part of the accommodation and retail outlets at the site, they gained a glimpse into one of the people that used this tiny one up, one down space. Under the floor boards where they are infilling the cellar, they found this old business card.

Through research it turns out that the gentleman on the card was a George Bowman whose Basket Making workshop was based there between 1901 – 1913. As you can just make out on the card at the bottom, he also had a stall at the city market. After his stay, the shop became a Confectioners until the late 1960’s and more recently, a kids clothes shop called Poco kids.
