At the YMCA Activity Centre in Newark, one of the last facilities to open has been the Climbing Hall, the centre officially having opened after the R G Carter handover in August this year.

With a team of newly recruited coaches, they have now started climbing sessions open to the public in the evening and at weekends on their 15m high Olympic specification walls providing for the three competition needs; lead climbing, bouldering and speed climbing. Still to open in this amazing hall, its sheer height a spectacular in itself, are the ‘clip ‘n’ climb’ walls which hope to start in the next few weeks with ten different wall treatments; sure to be a big hit with children and adults alike!

The climbing centre embodies the YMCA’s vision of inclusion and opportunity for all and so it is great to now see it being used to fulfil this; “You will be able to start as an absolute beginner — whether you are five or 50 — and keep training there up to Olympic standards.” YMCA Chief Operating Officer, Craig Berens.
