In 1978, R G Carter were proud to be part of the team that delivered the innovative and prestigious Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts; the first major building designed by architect Sir Norman Foster. This award winning gallery space was created to house Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury’s unique art collection, generously donated to the University of East Anglia.

The digging of its vast basement can be seen here, with the cuboid, clad steel building in progress above. Its many unique features included structural and service elements set within the roof and double-layered walls, and the vast and stunning glazed façade.
