Clare Castle Visitor Centre

The Old Goods Shed is a unique venue set in the grounds of the historic Clare Castle Country Park and was fully refurbished by R G Carter in 2019 to a high specification while weaving in the original historic features of the building, including the original railway lines.

The Old Goods Shed provides modern facilities and easy access for all ages within an original Victorian railway building. In the shadow of a Medieval motte and a stone’s throw from a beautiful
river walk, The Old Goods Shed is a landmark in the historic Suffolk Medieval town of Clare.

Works included complete strip out of the existing Grade II listed building and high end refurbishment works, which retained the existing structure and historical features including the railway line within this building.

There was additional consideration when bats were discovered to be nesting on the site. We engaged with a specialist to ensure the appropriate conservation. We carefully removed bricks and incorporated specialist changes within the design to ensure bat holes (separate from the public facilities) were provided to protect the bat species.
