Hammerton Court
Hammerton Court Dementia Care Unit is a state-of-the-art, BREEAM ‘Excellent’ facility within the grounds of the Julian Hospital in Norwich.
The facility offers support and care for the most seriously ill dementia suffers and was designed to meet the health and welfare requirements of the residents. The facility is also one of the largest single investments in dementia care in Norfolk.
RG Carter constructed the 36 bed facility, which incorporates a BIM (Building Information Modelling) integrated structural design featuring three central courtyards around the bedrooms and living spaces.
The bedrooms feature a host of innovative technology and design features to help the residents live as independently as possible. This technology includes automated switches, which switch on the pathfinder lighting when the resident steps out of bed.
BIM was used to assist with the 3D modelling of the challenging structure, and determine the best solution for the installation of the mechanical and electrical services, ensuring optimum distribution across the structure.
The design team studied natural daylight patterns to determine where roof lights were located, reducing the overall energy consumption required. This approach helped to achieve a BREAAM ‘Excellent’ rating for its overall design and notable number of sustainable features.
