Peterborough City Hospital – LINAC Building

The project comprised the construction of a Single Story Extension to the existing radiotherapy unit, consisting of a concrete bunker with 1.3metre thick walls, floors and ceilings to enable protection against radiation leaks. The Extension was required to house two new top of the range Linear Accelerators for Radiotherapy treatment.

Along with the single story extension, associated offices have been constructed using a concrete frame. The Plant Room situated on top of the offices was constructed using a steel frame. Amendments to the existing parking, roadways, paths and cycle storage were also carried out by our Project Team.

Externally, the works were kept in line with the surrounding buildings on site. The cladding system continued from the existing elevations onto the new extension, this theme followed through internally with the same specification finishes being used in the new extension that were used in the existing hospital.

This consistency within the site and allowed the seamless transition when entering the new buildings. Within the extension a new reception area was fitted. 3nr consulting rooms were constructed as well as a private waiting area and public waiting room. 2 offices and 2 control rooms were also constructed within the building as well as toilets, store room and electric cupboard.

The plant room, situated on the roof, contains the air handling units, heat exchanges and pumps. as well as the Building Management System panels. The chillers are located just outside of this plant room.

ADDED VALUE

As part of the RG Carter Group we were able to utilise the resources from our in-house Group companies to deliver a one-team approach providing a full suite of services to Peterborough City Hospital to deliver a high-quality end-product. We received design expertise from Carter Design to develop and interrogate the structural design (as it had extensive concrete pour for the RC Frame which was high risk factor on the project), RGC Engineering for the construction of the Bunker as well as RGC Technical Services who provided a Clerk of Works to check for overall compliance. This is an approach which RG Carter take pride in, by being able provide our Clients with a ‘one team approach’ setting us apart from our competitors.
