R G Carter has now installed 10 atrium support steels on the STEM project in Luton. The bespoke steels form a key part of the new atrium that will join the facility to the neighbouring university building.

A design scaffold was erected with openings formed within to allow the 20m high columns to be lifted into position. Each column was fed down through the scaffold with eight people in attendance to ensure they passed through the scaffold smoothly – with only 200mm clearance all round it was a tight squeeze!

All 10 columns were installed over a 2 day period, having been fabricated and painted off site before being escorted to site as an abnormal load. Weighing in at a touch over 3 tonnes, these are the heaviest steel members on site.
