R G Carter has commenced work to the WWII watchtower at Alconbury Weald. This is now our sixth project on this development for Urban & Civic.
The grade II listed building will undergo a complete overhaul to create offices for let and a community space for meetings and events, and also includes storage and welfare facilities.
The primary works include; stripping the existing corrugated roof sheeting of the Nissen Hut, window refurbishment works, reconditioning the original doors, insulating the external and internal perimeter walls and installing bespoke copper taps and fittings.
Alconbury Weald is a former airfield, occupied by both British and American Forces between 1939 to 1995.
On 22nd May 1943 as a bomb was being loaded onto a B-17 of the 95th Bombardment Group, it detonated accidentally, killing 18 and injuring a further 27 men. To commemorate this loss, the watchtower will be externally painted the same colours as that fatal aircraft with its graphic being reproduced and painted onto Nissen Hut roof.
