The Maple Surgery, Bar Hill

Following the successful refurbishments of Queens Park Health Centre and Leighton Buzzard Health Centre for NHS Property Services Ltd, R G Carter were appointed to deliver the refurbishment of The Maple Surgery in Cambridgeshire.

The surgery, which was originally built in the 1960s, serves the community of Bar Hill, located just off Junction 25 of the A14. The works were designed to modernise the facility, improve compliance with current NHS standards, and enhance patient and staff environments while maintaining service continuity through phased construction.

Internally, the scheme reconfigured elements of the existing layout to optimise clinical provision, including the formation of an additional consultation room and the conversion of existing spaces into compliant treatment, dirty utility, and consulting areas. The refurbishment delivered upgraded GP consulting rooms, a new HTM-compliant treatment suite, and improved ancillary accommodation including storage, staff areas, and WCs.

A key aspect of the works was the provision of new sanitary facilities to meet current accessibility and regulatory requirements, including a fully compliant Accessible WC in accordance with Approved Document Part M and Health Building Note 00-02, alongside new and upgraded unisex staff and patient WC facilities. Clinical support spaces have been enhanced with new IPS units, hand wash basins, and specialist fittings in line with HTM guidance.

The reception and waiting areas have undergone refurbishment to improve functionality and patient experience, including partial reconfiguration of the reception desk and upgrades to finishes throughout. New partitions and fire rated enclosures were introduced where required, including the formation of a compliant electrical intake cupboard.

The finishes strategy included full redecoration and making good throughout, replacement of floor finishes with non-slip sheet vinyl with integral coved skirting, and renewal of doors, frames, and fixtures. Additional works included radiator cover removal, installation of new curtain tracking, and upgrades to internal linings and plasterwork.

Externally, repairs and repointing to brickwork and improvements to site infrastructure such as signage, access safety systems, and hardstanding elements were delivered.

The works were delivered in 19 weeks, and were undertaken in accordance with relevant NHS Health Building Notes (HBNs) and Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs), with careful consideration given to infection control, fire safety, and accessibility. The phased construction allowed the practice to remain fully operational throughout the duration of the works, ensuring minimal disruption to the clinical staff, patients and visitors.
