Ely, Cambridgeshire
Introduction:
R G Carter were asked to construct a new 5,000 square metre block paved storage, hard standing and rail siding for The Potter Group at Ely in Cambridgeshire.
Details:
- The California bearing ratio (CBR) testing, a penetration test to evaluate the mechanical strength of road subgrades and basecourses, revealed poor load-bearing capacity (scoring only between one and three percent) for an area required to take 40 tonne axle loads.
- Using the British Port Associations specification for heavy duty pavements, the construction detail was increased by 30%.
- Working to a tight schedule the additional design was constructed within the original contract period and the full 5,000 square metres of blocks laid within one week.
